U.S. Hydrokinetic Installation Squeezes More Clean Power from Mississippi River

With the flick of a switch, the first ever commercial-scale hydrokinetic power plant in the U.S. officially commenced operation in the Mississippi River yesterday. The hydrokinetic turbines, manufactured by Hydro Green Energy LLC , are located below an existing hydropower plant at Hastings, Minnesota. The initial turbine has a capacity of 100KW. When fully operational, the new facility will have a capacity of 250KW, adding more than 5.7% of sustainable energy generation without the n

Campaigners fighting wind farm plans in Stinchcombe are given extra time

Campaigners trying to put a stop to a wind farm with eight 120 metre turbines near their homes have been given extra time to object to an initial monitoring mast. Green energy firm Ecotricity is planning an eight turbine wind farm on land between Stinchcombe and the M5. However before the full application for the farm is submitted the company plans to put up a 70 metre wind monitoring mast to work out how much energy it can expect to generate from . . .

New Underwater Turbines Use Shallow Water to Make Electricity

By Mike on August 4th, 2009 Seattle-based Hydrovolts Inc. has developed a new system which can be used to generate electricity from small, unassuming waterways such as irrigation canals, without the use of dams.To generate electricity in shallow waters, the system is based on the use of a FlipWing turbine. The FlipWing turbine’s blades have a hinged mechanism so that they fold backwards on the upstream stroke, reducing drag. The turbines are perfect for irrigation canals and aqueducts,

Workers (Sort of) Win! UK Gov’t Offers £6 Million to Vestas to Keep Turbine Plant Open

Twenty-five workers holed-up in the Vestas facility on the UK’s Isle of Wight for about a week now may have saved their jobs if a proposed deal is agreed upon by both parties. But even if the deal does go through, only a small portion of the workers will keep their jobs as the funding is only enough to keep the company’s offshore research and development division alive. The majority of the over six hundred employees at the two closing Vestas plants will be losing their jobs. The blade plant

McGinnis Company offers barges for electric rivers

Hydro Green Energy’s 4-turbine river packageAn Ohio company is seeking to anchor barges at 11 spots along the Ohio River, including Louisville, as part of a potential $22 million “green” initiative to turn river current into electrical current. The barges, with submerged turbines, would each generate relatively little electricity — enough to power about 260 typical homes…The Ohio River project, proposed by McGinnis Inc., of South Point, Ohio, would include one barge anchored just below the McAlpi
